Fadzayi Mahere’s physical transformation is the inspiration you needed

Zimbabwean lawyer and former parliamentarian Advocate Fadzayi Mahere has had physical transformation, and it is what we needed for goals and stuff.

Let’s first let her tell her story.

Today marks the start of Month 3 of my fitness journey. At the end of last year, I was at my heaviest. Obviously, being a campaign year I was juggling ten million balls – lawyering, spokespersoning, campaigning, travelling, MPing, Zimbabweaning, familying – the list was endless.
Almost everyday, I had a justifiable excuse for not going to the gym – my poor trainer was inundated with messages ranging from “I left Parliament at midnight” to “I’m still in Chambers and it’s 2am (insert pic for control). It was such a mess.
Paradoxically, keeping in good health so I could remain alive to do all these things was not a priority. Many of the bad habits that I’d let go of had crept back in – eating bad carbs, drinking soda, eating fast food, having sugary foods, bingeing on cake, not sleeping, not taking a break, not even pausing to check my mental health. I was on autopilot.
Just after Christmas, I stood on the scale. I was as shocked as I am when I look at marked prices in the shops these days. At first I was in denial – told myself the scale could be broken. I then got angry at how I had allowed things to get this bad. I then got sad because it felt insurmountable. I soothed myself Netflix, pizza and milkshakes. This made everything worse.
As I got closer to the end of the year, I started planning my 2024. I started with a look at my 2023 goals – there was some professional stuff, some money stuff, some political stuff and some family stuff. I’d prioritised, stuck to and achieved most of them.
However, I observed that I had not made looking after my health a goal that I took as seriously as I did my goal to be a mover and shaker in my legal career or my goal to win the parliamentary election. 2024 was going to be different.
I resolved to treat my health goals with the same level of seriousness, mental strength and investment that I usually take to other spheres of my life. I haven’t missed a workout session so far. I’ve been punctual and consistent. I’m able to power through even on hard days.
I’m not where I want to be but I’m not where I used to be. For that I’m grateful. The journey continues.

If you had met or seen her before, she looked fine. But, with her transformation she looks better than you imagined her and she feels, well, fresh.

What she says is summarised at the bottom. I’m not where I want to be but I’m not where I used to be.

So for you, it is not necessarily about fitness goals. It is about progress, moving, getting somewhere, away from where you are.

It might not feel bad. But when you have the conversation with yourself, is that where you want to be?
