Netflix officially buying Warner Bros. Discovery, the home of ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Harry Potter’

Netflix has won the streaming war.

They are buying Warner Bros. Discovery.

“Today, Netflix, Inc. (the Company) and Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc. (WBD) announced they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Netflix will acquire Warner Bros., including its film and television studios, HBO Max and HBO,” a statement read.

WBD is the home of series such as Game of Thrones, Friends, and other HBO Max streaming shows. They also have Harry Potter.

“The transaction was unanimously approved by the Boards of Directors of both Netflix and WBD,” said Netflix.

“In addition to the completion of the separation of Discovery Global (WBD’s Global Networks business), completion of the transaction is subject to required regulatory approvals, approval of WBD shareholders and other customary closing conditions. The transaction is expected to close in 12-18 months.”

Critics say this will reshape the entertainment industry and create a monopoly, given the world’s largest streamer is buying the third biggest. It could mean less choice for both customers and creators. The latter will have less people to negotiate with to get the best deal.

Netflix says it will have the opposite effect.

The news of course will be interesting for DStv who have a relationship with HBO. Also, they are currently at an impasse with WBD over 12 channels on its platform, which could all disappear at the end of the year if no new agreement is reached,

“Netflix expects to maintain Warner Bros.’ current operations and build on its strengths, including theatrical releases for films,” it said.

On top of that, there could be implications MultiChoice’s own streaming platform, Showmax. They also a lot of WBD content.
