Former Egypt President Hosni Mubarak has been sentenced to life in prison after a court found him guilty of conspiring to kill protestors.
His former interior minister Habib el-Adli, was also jailed for life but his sons Gamal and Alaa were cleared of corruption.
The 84 year-old is the first former leader to be tried in person following Arab Spring of 2001 protests. He is also the first to be tried by his people although he can still appeal his sentence.
While some people were satisfied with the result, others who had been calling for a death sentence were not too amused.
Mind you the timing is not necessarily the best given the chaos around the current elections. Currently it pits the deposed Mubarak’s former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq and a representative of the Muslim Brotherhood who was banned under him.
The prosecution has meanwhile asked for Mubarak to be immediately transferred to a maximum security prison.
