Tuskers – 203 and 245 all out in 67 overs (Sean Williams 67, Tafara Mupariwa 57, Brian Chari 27; Mike Chinouya 5/49, Brandon Mavuta 4/90, Brad Evans 1/19)

Rhinos – 301 and 149-5 in 30.2 overs (Antum Naqvi 70, Ben Curran 49, Takudzwanashe Kaitano 19; Nkosana Mpofu 3/15, Luke Jongwe 1/23, Sean Williams 1/38)

Rhinos won by five wickets

A steady partnership between Ben Curran and Antum Naqvi was decisive as Rhinos recorded a five-wicket victory over Tuskers on the third day of their Logan Cup match at Kwekwe Sports Club on Tuesday.

Tuskers began the day on 199 for five wickets in their second innings, leading the home side by 101 runs.

They needed at least one of their remaining batters to make a big score to give themselves a reasonable chance of victory, but that did not happen.

Hamid Ali went for 20, Luke Jongwe went on to make a rather restrained 27, but Mike Chinouya took three of the five remaining wickets and Tuskers were dismissed for 245, leaving Rhinos only 148 to win.

Chinouya finished with a five-wicket haul, costing him 49 runs, while Brandon Mavuta took four for 90.

It now needed something special from the Tuskers bowlers, but they were unable to produce it, although they had two wickets down for 40 runs.

Then Naqvi joined Curran and they added 96 for the third wicket, taking Rhinos to the verge of victory.

There was a minor hiccup now, as Nkosana Mpofu came on to bowl and removed Curran for 49 and Ahsan Ali Aqil in the same over, followed by a return catch from Naqvi, who had 70 – three wickets in eight balls.

Naqvi has four first-class centuries to his credit, but curiously this is his first dismissal between 50 and 100.

Now it only took a four apiece from Nyasha Mayavo and Mavuta to complete the Rhinos victory, Mpofu finishing with three wickets for 15 runs.

Southern Rocks – 384 and 247-3 in 64.1 overs (Johnathan Campbell 79, Matthew Campbell 73, Saifuddin Zaib 44*; Trevor Mutsamba 1/39)

Eagles – 318 all out in 70.2 overs (Tinashe Kamunhukamwe 124, Faraz Akram 59*, Rodney Mupfudza 51; Priviledge Chesa 4/76, Takudzwa Chataira 3/85, Cuthbert Musoko 1/42)

Day 3 – Stumps: Southern Rocks lead by 313 runs

Coincidentally, Matthew and Johnathan Campbell both scored seventies and were both run out in Southern Rocks’ second innings at Takashinga Cricket Club on Tuesday, but by the close the match appeared to be heading for a draw.

Eagles completed their first innings in the morning for 318 after being 298 for nine wickets overnight, with Faraz Akram left stranded on 59 not out from 70 balls.

Takudzwa Chataira took three wickets for 85 runs and Priviledge Chesa four for 76, but the last wicket fell to a run-out.

Rocks went in again with a first-innings lead of 66, and did their best to push the score along quickly.

After Tafadzwa Tsiga was out for 11, the Campbell brothers took over and put on 137 for the second wicket before Matthew was run out for 73, followed at 194 for three by Johnathan for 79.

Rocks’ efforts were impeded by poor light, which eventually halted play for the day on 241 for three, just as Saifuddin Zaib (43) and Roy Kaia (30) were developing a good partnership.

Rocks are very well placed with a lead of 307 runs and seven wickets still in hand, but they will need a very good bowling performance if they are to force home a victory in time on the fourth and final day.
