UPDATE: WhatsApp restored in Zimbabwe

The WhatsApp messaging service which was down in Zimbabw for 4 hours has been restored

No comment has been made on the reason behind the blackout which has led to speculation that it had been blocked after a call for a nationwide shutdown by activists and opposition parties.

Tech-savvy Zimbabweans had resorted to VPN options to access the popular messaging services but by around 11.30pm the service had started working normally.

WhatApp and other social media services have been used extensively by those behind the Zimbabwe shut down. That has probably given people reason to believe the state was behind it.

Meanwhile, MISA Zimbabwe has condemned the alleged blackout as an action against right to free expression.
