THREE things that need to happen now after Mighty Warriors’ successes

For those who will not know, the Zimbabwe women’s national team, the Mighty Warriors has qualified for the African Women’s Cup of Nations to be held in Cameroon later this year.

This is after they beat Zambia 3-2 away from home to complete and 4-2 aggregate win.

It follows the historic qualification for the Olympics in Brazil.

With this in the bag there are critical follow-up steps that have to take place.

Women’s national league

At the moment there is no real league. With this being the case, our girls now need regular football. The talent and determination is there and it needs to be reflected in a genuine investment.

Investment in girls’ football

With these successes there is a unique chance to inspire girls into taking football seriously. Or at least giving them a path to playing it seriously with the knowledge that they can work towards a career in it. This is of course predicated on the success of the first point. The ministry of sport and recreation is key to this.

More visibility for the game

So ZBC does not have access to visuals from the men’s game at highest domestic level. The same can’t be said for women’s football. Imagine if there was more coverage of different aspects of the game and creating a real momentum. Imagine if all media started creating a national buzz for the team going to the Olympics and the AWCN.
