Econet Media has bagged the linear TV rights to America’s National Football League (NFL) for sub-Saharan Africa.
This will see the company through its Kwese Sports platform broadcast at least five live games per week Thursday Night Football, three games every Sunday, Monday Night Football, as well as every game of the NFL playoffs and the annual Super Bowl. It will also choose matches to made available free to air.
Kwese will also broadcast content such as NFL Live and Sunday NFL Countdown and classic NFL films.
These broadcast rights are in in Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Swaziland, South Sudan, Sierra Leone, Tanzania (including Zanzibar), Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The deal is for five years.
Econet Media CEO Joseph Hundah described the move as being ‘in line with our strategy to make Kwesé Sports the home of premium American sports content in Africa’.
Econet Media has already signed up the NBA, limited FTA rights for the Premier League, Cricket Australia rights as well multiple other content deals as it makes a serious move in the market in sub-Saharan Africa.
