Chitiyo double earns Caps win over USM Alger

Ronald Chitiyo scored two goals as Zimbabwe champions Caps United beat USM Alger in a Group B Caf Champions League match at the National Sports Stadium.

Caps went into the match in desperate need of a win after they were beaten by Egypt’s Zamalek in the first match.

In an open game, USM Alger had the first real attack carving Kepe Kepe defence open and missing a glorious chance with an open net.

In the 16th minute Chitiyo punished the Norther Africans as his well-placed shot from a crowded box glided into the bottom corner beating the sparing dive of Zemmamouche.

After that the hosts were on the front foot for long periods but chance after chance was missed, with Abbas most guilty of not making good work of Phineas Bhamusi and Hardlife Zvirekwi’s creativity on the far side.

It was always going to be testy and when Abdellaoui equalised for USM in the second half the gods seemed to have turned away from the Green Machine.

Cometh the man cometh the hour. Chitiyo stepped up in the 81st minute, sending the Kepe Kepe faithful home with their first victory of the season’s group stage.

And after Zamalek drew 0-0 with Al Ahly Tripoli Caps are third behind USM Alger on goal difference.
