A religious group, the Concerned Christian Leaders & Citizens Network (CCLCN), plans to petition the parliament of Zimbabwe over sections on the constitution it finds unpalatable.
In an email we received from them, they said:
We as CCLCN are a semi-autonomous grouping of Christian opinion leaders and citizens of evangelical pentecostal persuasion affiliated to the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe. Our main thrust is to advocate and lobby for the Godly voice and constituency in the nation to find place and space on the national agenda. On the issues to do with constitutionalism, we have noted that the new Constitution, though widely reckoned as progressive, has got some loopholes of existential concern to the church community and any responsible citizen. At the level of moral values that the new Constitution espouses, we have noted that in a very subtle way, the following are accommodated: homosexuality, same sex unions and “marriages”, abortion on demand, muzzling of the church to preach against certain practices such as homosexuality, shutting out of the preaching of the gospel in public schools, workplaces and other public institutions, among others.
They then attached two documents which detail why they are not fans of parts of the new charter. They refer to the sections they do not fancy as ‘unGodly, unZimbabwean, and foreign.
You can click here to download the first one. The second one is accessible here. Both documents are in Word format.
Zimbabweans voted overwhelmingly in favour of a new constitution in March. Parliament will sit this week to start the process of making it the new supreme law of the country.
