So Tourism Minister Walter Mzembi has decided that it was time we legalised shebeens.
In fact he wants them to be referred to as home hospitality centres which will be registered and graded.
Off course this is subject to laws through parliament and the works but you get the idea.
Mzembi told the national assembly that the bans were from a colonial era but we wonder where zoning laws will come into this. Because where you have a shebeen you will have loud music, loads of cars and the sort. Which means neighbours are affected.
Look, we are all for new ideas and we hope these new shebeen plans do include more less commercial alcohols are created and sold at these centres. This expands the economy and we have a lot more happy people (alcoholics but all the same).

The key though is the application. Drunk and disorderly conduct must not be encouraged in safe residential areas. One shudders to think of the idea of the missus coming home and some fella high on who knows what at the shebeen next door having the dutch courage to offer his unmentionables to her.
It is a new space but if they find a way to make it work, why not?
So what happens to the National Alcohol Policy which was going to have strict vice grip on the sale of alcohol?
