The promise of the opening Africa Cup of Nations 2017 match against Algeria failed to yield anything as Zimbabwe bowed out of the tournament losing 4-2 to Tunisia in Libreville, Gabon.
They started off flat and slow once again and by the time Knowledge Musona had pulled one back for the Warriors Naim Sliti, Youssef M’sakni and Taha Khenissi had already pulled the North Africans ahead.
No sooner had Musona opened the door for a dramatic comeback that Wahab Khazri restored the three goal lead from the spot after a clumsy tackle from poor Costa Nhamoinesu.
Coach Kalisto Pasuwa brought Tendai Ndoro on Danny Phiri who was having a nigtmare of a game and the Orlando Pirates striker created purpose in attack, stretching defenders. He was rewarded when he got on the end of a Musona weighted pass to toe poke his strike past Rami Jridi.
After that Zimbabwe only threatened in brief spurts and there never was enough urgency to get back into the match.
With Pasuwa only making a second change, Kuda Mahachi for Musona, in the 88th minute, it was stale at most times, with blind passes under very little pressure and stupid tackles the order.
Zimbabwe leave the tournament, with one half a match to talk about. Other than that, they simply weren’t good enough.
Tunisia and Senegal are in the next round and are well worth the reward. The latter made 11 changes to the side that beat the Warriors and still earned a 2-2 draw against Algeria.
