Rapper Stunner who is on tour in the United States has bemoaned what he feels is the lack of appreciation for Zimbabwean celebrities at home.
In a post from a few days ago he said:
You get out of Zimbabwe, they give u Miss Cameroon and Miss Africa Texas as your escorts, a limo and free undisturbed ALL ACCESS pass into all the clubs. You come back home, you hear the whispers, “Haana kana basa” and the bouncers by the door hustling u even when u r holding your $10 to get into a club were they won’t even acknowledge that u r there. Maybe this explains why Jesus was killed when he came back to his hood. ( Vanhu vekwaunobva havafare ) It’s not right to feel at home when u r thousands of miles away from home. #Music#Respect#ConnectAfrica#Superstar#SupportLocalMusic#Microphone
Some felt that Stunner, real name Desmond Chideme, was out of order, while others were of the opinion that he was right.
We think he is correct. Most establishments do not understand the value of having certain personalities coming to their clubs. Sure, you do not have to like the artist but their presence is an endorsement of your facility. That artists are not treated as intellectual assets that need protection is ridiculous.
We’re not of course suggesting that any person who has ever touched a mic should be given special treatment but there is a group of artists, growing by the day who should be accorded respect.
‘But don’t worry Des. We know of a club in Harare which failed to capitalise on the presence of a foreign artist on its premises.
Quick side-note: We know someone is going to take issue with the use of the word celebrities. Some people have issue with that. Leave it.
