Zimbabwe hope it comes together in final ODI as batting improves

Zimbabwe have seen an improvement in their batting and the second one day international against Bangladesh proved that.

While they lost by seven wickets, the Chevrons posted back to back scores of over 200 for the first time in a while, especially against a full member.

While coach Lalchand Rajput will see this as improvement he will be aware of the fact that had his charges been more positive they could have put out a score of over 300.

What has generally hurt the team up front is the indifferent form of captain Hamilton  Maskadza who has been getting stars but unable to push on. Wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor is in rich form and now has had his most successful year in terms of runs with the bat, averaging in his 40s. He felt he had gone out at the wrong time, playing the reverse sweep to Mahmadullah.

The returning Sikandar Raza fell short of a half century by the slimmest of margins while Sean Williams’s form persisted.

But it was critical periods where there just too many dot balls or periods in which the batsmen failed to find the boundary. And in the last five overs, scoring only 19 was a poor response to death bowling. The poor form of former captain Elton Chigumbura will be a big worry for the coach and he might be tempted to bring in Tarisai Musakanda for the final match.

That said, it was a day in which the reliable bowling went missing. The precocious Brandon Mavuta often bowled too short while Donald Tirpano’s lines were all over the place allowing the top order to dispatch him with ease.

Raza took all the wickets in that second match and Kyle Jarvis gave away very little with an economy rate of 3.44.

To stop this 12 match losing streak Zimbabwe will need the bowlers back in form again while building on their batting.

The match is at Chittagong again and first ball will sent down at 10.30am Zimbabwe time. Catch it on the continent on SuperSport.
