“I had absolute faith in the girls” – Gems coach Lloyd Makunde after World Cup debut win

Zimbabwe coach Lloyd Makunde spoke to the media after his side’s impressive 79-49 victory over Sri Lanka in the Gems’ Vitality Netball World Cup debut.

Makunde watched his side play with the swagger of a team that belongs at that level.

On scoring 79 goals on World Cup debut

To be honest, I never thought we would reach 79 but I had absolute faith in the girls.

On which connections impressed him the most from his team

Yah we were a bit disturbed by the tall goalshooter, but we always count on mid-court to offence so it really worked just by the book.

On the importance of scoring 16 goals from turnovers especially with better teams coming up

It’s very very crucial because to win a game of netball you need to make sure all the turnovers are put to close. So we are working on that especially on tomorrow’s (Saturday) game against the Aussies.

On realistic aims for the World Cup

We are actually hoping to be in the top 5.

On what to take from this game and where to tidy up for Australia game

I would say we need to tie up on our defence. We need to be very cautious when we play a team like Australia who are tall and fast. Their transition is very well so we need to work very hard on that but otherwise I still have got faith in my girls.

On the eighth player, the fans

That was absolutely amazing. It was like we were at home. I would like to thank the fans for that

Zimbabwe play the Aussies next on Saturday and then finish off the first phase against Northern Ireland.
