Constitutional Court: 31 July Date Stands

Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Court has said that elections should go ahead on 31 July, and there will be no extension offered.

Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku said this without giving  reason. It took all of 15 minutes for the judges to make  unanimous ruling.

Said Chidyausiku:

For the avoidance of doubt, elections should proceed on the 31st of July in terms of the proclamation by the President of Zimbabwe in compliance with the order of this court.

The Southern African Development Community(SADC) had asked Zimbabwe’s government to seek an extension but it was always ill-fated. One of the reasons was that there was no provision by law for the courts to afford an extension after a presidential proclamation especially in execution of a court order.

The MDC-T has said that it will abide by the court order.

So there you have it. Elections will take place on 31 July 2o13. We hope it is peaceful cause, yah hey…

On that same day, Zimbabwe is supposed to be playing a cricket match against India. Is that still going to happen?
