Two men have been fined after attempting to cheat in a Mathematics exam, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is reporting.

Paddington Chataika (36) and Joseph Murimba (33) appeared before the Epworth Magistrates’ Court on charges of contravening the ZIMSEC Act i.e. sitting, offering or attempting to present oneself at an examination with the intention of impersonating another person.

It is the state’s case that on the 16th of October 2024, the duo connived that Murimba would sit for the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC), Mathematics Paper 2 on behalf of Chataika who was a registered candidate.

According to their plan, Chataika handed a copy of his passport to Murimba who sat for the examination.

The matter came to light through a whistleblower who alerted ZIMSEC officials.

The ZIMSEC officials, accompanied by the Police, proceeded to the examination centre where they found Murimba in the examination room, having already finished writing.

The two were convicted and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment of which six months was suspended. A further six months were suspended on condition that the accused persons perform 210 hours of community service.
