Two Beitbridge men, Ayanda Nkomo (26) and Will Jaricha (28), were convicted of sodomy by the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court on charges brought by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

According to the NPA, the incident occurred on 31 March, 2024, at Konka Night Club in Beitbridge.

The two men were reportedly drinking together and left the club around 11:40 pm while embracing. Security personnel at the nightclub, noticing their closeness, became suspicious and followed them to a nearby restroom.

Upon opening the restroom door, the security guards found Nkomo and Jaricha engaged in a compromising situation – caressing each other, kissing, and with Nkomo reportedly exposing himself. Nkomo attempted to flee, but both men were apprehended by security and reported to the police, leading to their arrest.

The court found Nkomo and Jaricha guilty and sentenced them to a fine of US$150 each. Failure to pay the fine would result in 120 days of imprisonment.

Zimbabwe criminalises men being intimate with each other a swell as same-sex marriage of any type.
