ZRP Basera Police Officers Admond Mavhangira (45) and Allen Hamandishe (32) have been arraigned before a Gutu Magistrates’ Court on theft allegations, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is reporting.

The duo is accused, together with Calvin Munhamo (38), Daniel Charungwa (45), Costa Fire (29) and Shepherd Masundidzire (49), who is employed by Madzingo Transporters as a driver, of stealing maize meant for drought relief.

It is the state’s case that on the 13th of June 2024 at around 1600 hours at Alheit Business Centre in Basera, Hamandishe was charged with the duty of escorting a truck carrying 370 x 50kg of drought relief maize to ZRP Basera Police Camp for safekeeping.

Masundidzire drove the truck and parked it at Basera Police Camp at 1900 hours.

Afterwards, the six allegedly hatched a plan to steal part of the consignment.

The three of them are said to have returned at around 2130 hours and driven the truck to Chimombe Clinic.

They picked the Nhamo, Charungwa and Fire along the way to the clinic, where they offloaded 170 x 50kg of maize.

The matter came to light when the maize was being distributed.

Investigations led to the arrest of the accused persons. The total value stolen was USD 3,646.

The accused persons were denied bail on Friday and will appear in court again on the 1st of August 2024.
