Notorious robber suspected of brazen USD4m Bulawayo heist

Notorious robber Elijah Vumbunu is one of the suspects in the brazen USD4 million heist in Bulawayo on Thursday.

The daylight mission to divest the Cash-In-Transit vehicle of its contents outside the EcoBank branch at NRZ building happened at 3.30 pm in full view of the public.

So wanton was it that pedestrians took videos of the masked gang carrying out their mischief just a block away from the Bulawayo Central Police Station.

“Initial indications are that US$4 million cash has been stolen. The manner in which this robbery occurred shows an element of an inside job or leakage of information”, Police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi said

“As investigations intensify, police assures the public that the law will take its course without fear or favour.”

Now Vumbunu, who is from a crime family, which includes brothers Abraham and Tonderai, has been classified as a viable suspect.

The trio is based in South Africa but often slips into the country to commit robberies.

There are also suspicions that whoever robbed the bank had inside help.
