Man jailed after escaping police custody… twice

Bukhabo Sibanda (20) of Tsholotsho has been jailed after a full trial, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has announced.

Sibanda appeared before the Tsholotsho Magistrates’ Court, facing charges of unlawful entry, two counts of escaping from lawful custody and another charge of assault.

The state’s case was that, on the 2nd of June 2024, the complainant, Sibongile Mguni, attended a funeral, leaving her homestead in the care of her nine-year-old son.

On the following day, the complainant went back home and discovered that her two-in-one blanket and a black amplifier were missing.

Mguni then tracked the spoor, which led to Sibanda’s residence, where she recovered her blanket and the amplifier hidden inside the accused person’s bedroom.

Sibanda was arrested following a police report.

He then escaped from lawful custody twice before he committed an assault offence, leading to his re-arrest.

Sibanda has been sentenced to an effective 78 months imprisonment.
