A landlord has been convicted of his tenant over a rental dispute, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Jonah Banda (40) from Ascot in Gweru appeared before the Gweru Magistrates’ Court facing assault charges.

It was the state’s case that on the 1st of October 2024, at around 1245 hours, the tenant was sewing clothes in the sitting room when Banda knocked on the door and entered before the complainant could respond.

Banda asked for rental money, and the complainant told him she had none.

Banda got angry and pulled a screwdriver from his pocket. He proceeded to stab her twice in the head.

The tenant reported the matter to the police, leading to the landlord’s arrest.

Banda was sentenced to four months imprisonment wholly suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
