A Mberengwa woman will spend the next 26 months behind bars after she killed a newborn baby to conceal a pregnancy from her husband, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is reporting.
The details are that Talent Priveledge Sibanda (27) from Madhuve Village, Mberengwa, was arraigned before the Zvishavane Magistrates’ Court facing infanticide charges.
The state’s case is that sometime in June 2023, Sibanda separated from her husband. They, however, reunited in February 2024, at which time she had become pregnant with another man.
On the 27th of October 2024, at around 1900 hours, Sibanda gave birth to a baby girl whilst she was alone. She then proceeded to callously strangle the baby before burying it in a pit in the field a few metres from her home.
It was after Sibanda’s neice noticed she was no longer pregnant that the matter came to light, whereupon she reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest.
Sibanda directed the police to where she had buried the newborn.
She was sentenced to 36 months imprisonment, of which ten were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. She will
serve 26 months effectively.
