A woman from Chegutu has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for contravening the Children’s Act by ill-treating or neglecting a child, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is reporting.

The accused appeared before the Chegutu Magistrates’ Court after an investigation revealed that she had physically abused a three-year-old stepdaughter.

The incident came to light on 9th July 2024 when an informant noticed the child crawling and unable to walk. Concerned, the informant moved closer and discovered that the child had severe swelling all over her body.

Upon inquiry, the informant realised the child had been assaulted.

They rushed the child to Chegutu Hospital, which admitted her for three days due to the extent of her injuries. Further investigations confirmed that the accused had subjected the child to physical abuse, prompting a police report and her subsequent arrest.

The court sentenced the accused to 18 months in prison, with four months suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

She will serve an effective 14-month jail term.
