Bikita herd boy jailed for stealing boss’s cow

Learnmark Maphosa (20) has been sentenced to nine years in prison by a Bikita Magistrate for stealing a cow from his employer’s herd.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the incident occurred in September 2023 when the complainant, who works in South Africa, returned home to find a beast missing from his cattle. He questioned his wife and Maphosa, who was employed as his herd boy, but neither could explain the animal’s disappearance.

The complainant then instructed Maphosa and another individual, Kudakwashe Manhungei, to locate the missing cow before departing for South Africa again.

Upon his return in March 2024, the cow remained missing. The complainant’s inquiries led him to the homestead of Calvin Mberengo, Maphosa’s uncle, where he discovered his stolen cow.

Mberengo reportedly confessed that Maphosa had brought the cow to his property, claiming it as payment for work done in Gava village.

A police report was subsequently filed, leading to Maphosa’s arrest.

The stolen cow, valued at US$400, was successfully recovered.
