South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi crowned Miss Universe

As she stood, expectant, a whole world watching, also with bated breath, it happened.

In her kinky hair, distinctly African sun-kissed smile, Zozibini Tunzi did it. She was crowned Miss Universe 2019 at the Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.

Instinctively, the girl who had failed in Miss South Africa 2017, covered her face with her eyes, the joy representing an overwhelming moment.

And she understood the gravity of that one single moment:

I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair, was never considered to be beautiful,.

I think that it is time that that stops today.

Yet there Zozibini stood having broken the wheel and moved the dial forward. She had beaten off 90 other countries in the 68th edition of the competition. First and second runners up were Puerto Rican and Mexican respectively.

Today we toast you, Zozibini. You dared, then claimed your thrown.
