Mugabe Threatens To Dissolve Parliament In Election Drive

Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe has threatened to dissolved parliament and set election dates if the constitution is concluded soon.

In a fiery speech at the ZANU-Pf conference earlier today the president said some people feared elections because they would be buried forever. He says he is willing to go to polls under the current constitution if need be.

According section 58 of the current constitution the president can dissolve parliament. ‘A general election and elections for members of the governing bodies of local authorities shall be held on such day or days within a period not exceeding four months after the issue of a proclamation dissolving Parliament, as the President may, by proclamation in the Gazette’.

Meanwhile finance minister Tendai Biti speaking in Manchester said we would be lucky to have a referendum by March, never mind an election. 30 March is the date proposed by the president.

The talk of elections has already affected business confidence in Zimbabwe with people now holding onto their wallets a lot tighter than usual. Which is a bit silly if you ask us.
