Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi has conceded defeat meaning his  Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) will be out of power for the first time in six decades.

“I wish to congratulate the opposition on their victory and concede the election,” he said in a press conference late Friday.

It ushers in a new governing party for the first time since independence.

The left-leaning opposition Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) is set to take over, led by its Harvard-educated human rights lawyer Duma Boko.

The Independent Electoral Commission is likely to confirm the results later on Friday.

The BDP’s fortunes waned largely the tough economy, increasing unemployment and allegations of corruption.
