In a bizarre but not uncommon crime, a Bulawayo man has been handed a 350-hour community service sentence after he was caught having sex with a donkey.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is reporting that Kimton Sibanda (40), who is employed as a domestic worker at Bilas Farm in Bulawayo was ordered to perform 350 hours of community service after he pleaded guilty to bestiality charges.

The facts of the case are that, on the 26th of March 2024, the Sibanda was caught in the act of
having sexual intercourse with a donkey by two witnesses inside his employer’s cattle kraal.

The two witnesses reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of the accused person.

The NPA says he pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to a wholly suspended 10 months imprisonment.

Sibanda was ordered to perform 350 hours of community service.

The most he could have gotten before is as before in terms of section 74 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act:

Any person who knowingly commits any sexual act with an animal or bird shall be guilty of bestiality and liable to a fine up to or exceeding level fourteen or imprisonment for a period not exceeding one year or both.

Level 14 is USD5,000 (ZiG68,000 as at 9 April 2024).

The lower sanction will be based on the Sentencing Guidelines as provided by the Judicial Services Commission, which consider mitigation and aggravation.
