2 poachers killed, 3 jailed

Liston Muchelo (22), Alex Kakoma (22) and Martin Silishebo (36) who are believed to be Zambian nationals were arraigned before the Victoria Falls Magistrates’ Court facing charges of contravening the Immigration Act and another charge of possessing unmarked raw ivory without a permit, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has said.

It is the state’s case and proved that:

On the 19 of March 2024 the three accused persons together with two accomplices who are now deceased entered Zimbabwe from Botswana through a bushy area near Kazungula Border Post which is an unlawful port of entry.

Whilst in Zimbabwe the accused persons made an attempt to cross into Zambia. Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority game rangers laid an ambush for the accused persons on the banks of the Zambezi River. There was a shoot out between the rangers and the five suspects which led to the death of the two poachers.

The game rangers managed to arrest the three accused persons and a physical search led to the recovery of 15 elephant tusks. Further searches led to the recovery of 6 live rounds of ammunition and a .375 H&H rifle.

The three pled guilty to the charges.

They were sentenced to 4months imprisonment wholly suspended for count 1.

They were sentenced to a further 9 years imprisonment for count 2.

The elephant tusks weighed 128.82kg.
