Former long-time Kenya president Arap Moi dies

Daniel Arap Moi, the man who was the second president of Kenya and led it for 24 years has died aged 95.

The announcement was made current head of state Uhuru Kenyatta:

It is with profound sadness and sorrow that I announce the passing of a Great African Statesman, H.E Daniel Toroitich arap Moi, the second president of the Republic of Kenya.

The former president passed on at the Nairobi Hospital on the early morning of 4th February 2020, in the presence of his family.

Often called the ‘professor of politics’, Moi was one of few politicians in Kenya who belonged to neither of the main ethnic groups – Kikuyu and Luo. He was a Tugen, a member of one of the smallest tribal groupings in Kenya, the Kalenjin.

His populist rule from 1978 to 2002 was dramatic. He survived a coup plot in 1982, oversaw economic stagnation, corruption scandals and only a constitutional change barred him from being president beyond 2002.
