Zim Domestic T20 Day 1: Mire marvels with maiden ton, Tuskers beat Eagles

The first day of Zimbabwe’s premier T20 tournament kicked of at Old Hararians on Thursday.

It was a day on which Rhinos opener Solomon Mire blasted his first ever T20 century with a massive 109. It was not quite as eye-watering Hamilton Masakadza’s 162 three seasons ago for the Mountaineers against the Eagles but it was a thing of beauty.

In this instance it was the Mountaineers who were being sent over the boundary with regularity. Mire’s knock came off 54 balls for a strike rate of over 200. He hit 11 sixes and four fours before Donald Tiripano had him caught by Timycen Maruma.

There were also runs for the returning Vusi Sibanda who made 55 off 39 balls. The Rhinos posted 219/4 from their 20 overs.

And if you thought that would be easy to defend you were wrong. Foster Mutizwa’s 58 and Roy Kaia’s best individual score of 53 kept things interesting. The Mountaineers would just fall short by 14 runs. 205/6.

In the second match at the same venue, Tuskers had Brian Chari with 46 off 36 and Tendai Maruma with 53 off 24 to lift them to 179/8.

Where Daniel Jackiel dazzled with 3-34 for Eagles, Thabo Mboyi responded with 3-31.

Regis Chakabva was notable with 61 off 37 and too captain Tino Mutombodzi with 33.

The tournament runs until Wednesday at Old Hararians before it makes its way to Harare Sports Club leading up to the final on Sunday.

Entrance is free.
