Government speaks on school fees increases, payment options and uniforms

School fees and levies can only be increased after approval by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the government has said.

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Prof Paul Mavima

And even then the school would need to provide:

  • audited accounts
  • minutes of a meeting with at least 20% of the School Parents Assembly
  • budget

With some schools saying they will accept only USD cash payment, or part that and RTGS (bond) payments, the government has said:

ALL schools should accept all modes of payment for fees & levies. Requests for payment in a specific currency are unacceptable. Parents should be allowed to buy uniforms from the cheapest supplier.

The government has accused some schools of effecting ‘speculative and arbitrary’ increases in school fees.

It’s going to be a bumpy ride.
