Chief Mpungu of Chisumbanje died after succumbing to injuries caused when his live-in girlfriend struck him with a machete after accusing him of infidelity.
Sarah Mtisi Mandlazi has since has been arrested on charges of murder and is assisting police with investigations.
Reports say the chief, 61, sustained a deep cut on his forehead and he needed 13 stitches. He also sustained deep cuts on both cheeks and lost a number of teeth.
Chief Mpungu and Mandlazi are said to have had a history of domestic disputes.
He is survived by 6 children.
