A massive asteroid is on its way to earth, well kind of.
Scientists expect Asteroid 86666 (2000 FL10) to burst some 25 million kilometres away from earth. Well that is super-close by space standards.
It is the largest asteroid at 2.6km wide to come that close to earth.
The effect of it hitting earth would be like multiple atom bombs.
Even if it hit water, it would send loads of water into the atmosphere and trigger tsunamis. In short loads of people would die.
Did we mention sunlight would be blocked out for years because of the dust.
Just as well it is not withing the seven-million kilometres that would risk as an actual collision.
Asteroid 86666 (2000 FL10) was observed 16 years ago. There are no objects detected so far that indicate a collision in the near future. We are talking about 0.01% chance of it happening in the next century.
The last major one was 65 million years ago.
Well smaller ones hit earth all the time.
