Allegations of hackers breaking into the Malawian Electoral Commission(MEC) computers to tamper with results has marred this year’elections.
The MEC said it was abandoning its digital results in favour of manual counting fueling speculation of the tampering.
The ruling People Party of president Joyce Banda is disputing partial results released by the private Zodiak radio station claiming opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader Peter Mutharika, the brother of late President Bingu wa Mutharika, had a narrow lead.
PP spokesman Wakuda Kamanga said:
We have reason to believe that the Malawi Electoral Commission digital election management platform has been hacked by some suspected DPP operatives.
The MEC has dismissed these rigging rumours.
An African election is never straightforward is it… well the South African one seemed to be.
Although this one is a bit different. The ruling party is accusing the opposition of rigging. It is usually the other way round.
