Mixed Reaction Over Proposed R Kelly Zimbabwe Show

The news of a proposed R Kelly show in Zimbabwe at the International Carnival has split opinion online.

The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority through its Chief Executive Karikoga Kaseke says it plans to bring the Grammy Award winning musician.

While his fans have received the news of the possibility of such a show with unbridled excitement a significant amount of people have not been so welcoming.

Recently, a music journalist, Jim DeRogatis, spoke extensively on what he described as ‘stomach churning’ details of the Kelly’s underage sex issues. Kelly was tried and acquitted on child pornography charges. DeRogatis, who started investigating Kelly 15 years ago says he should face rape charges for what he calls the ‘predacious’ nature of Kelly’s encounters with underage women. He brings up issues to do with the late Aaliyah, who Kelly is alleged to have had a sexual relationship with when she was 13. It is said he falsified her birth certificate to 18  so he could marry her when she was 15. There are two dozen girls that DeRogatis talks about with some of them having attempted suicide over the whole affair.

That is what the rape victim advocacy groups are reacting to. They say by bringing Kelly in, the country is co-signing allegations against Kelly. The content of his latest album Black Panties, which some see as abusive to women, has not helped things along.

However his fans say that his allegations have nothing to do with his music. They talk about the fact that Kelly has had his day in court and so should be left alone.

It’s difficult to decide what is right or wrong here. While the allegations against Kelly, which have turned out to be more grave than we thought of them to be, are galling, you can see where his fans are coming from.

What do you think? Should R Kelly come to Zimbabwe?
