Mugabe Declares 31 July As Election Date

President Robert Mugabe has reportedly declared Zimbabwe’s election date as 31 July

President Mugabe has invoked presidential powers to Gazette the amendments outside of parliament. The Extra-ordinary Gazette proclaims Election Date as 31 July 2013, and nomination starts 28 June 2013.

Presidential Powers (Temporary Measures) (Amendment of Electoral Act) Regulations, 2013, Statutory Instrument 85 of 2013 has been Gazetted.

Essentially he has made unilateral declaration. From what we hear, he had already made the declaration by Monday which was then published today.

It will make for an interesting SADC meeting this coming Saturday in Maputo.

His rival Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has been vocal about his opposition to this move.
