Gono Goes After Facebook Page Admins

Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Dr Gideon Gono has had enough of Facebook pages which have been rather unkind to him.

A number of Facebook pages have been painting him in an unflattering light of late. First there was Mai Jukwa who accused Gono of stealing gold coins and pretty much bribing the country’s anti-corruption commission.

A recent one from a page called The Jokes Corner has shown a picture of a woman and claimed that she was Gideon Gono’s flame. It has since been revealed that this is untrue given that the image in question was that of a woman who appeared on Nigerian and Ghanian websites.

Gono has gone so far as to offer his $200,000 Mercedez Benz to anyone who could provide proof that he had a mistress called Fiona Sibanda.

He has threatened to file lawsuits against administrators of the administrators of the Facebook pages in question.

There has been a worrying increase in the number of internet trolls coming up from Zimbabwe purporting to have damaging information on prominent figures only for the information to be false. We are all for freedom of expression but the minute it is purely libel then it has gone way too far. It lends nothing to the global conversation of this country and should be treated with disdain.

Just to show you how rubbish some of these claims are, none of them use their real names. Yet they are happy to soil the names of other people.

Shame on the people who spread their falshehoods too. Surely we are better than this.
