Pfumvudza has become a rage with the rural folk as well as its important and fundamental aspect in term in terms of climate agriculture.
According to Foundations for Farming
Many well meaning Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs), who understand that conservation
agriculture (CA) is a sustainable solution to this predicament have provided inputs to attempt to
persuade farmers that there is better way of agriculture. However, this often fails once the “carrot” in the form of free inputs is removed, the farmers quickly revert to their conventional methods accepting soil degradation and yield decline.
So what pfumvudza, which literally means ‘new season’ does is to provide very precise collection of essential inputs for farmers. The inputs are also in such a way that maximise the use of a rectangular plot of land. There are are higher yields for the same space of land, with a less labour intensive approach allowing a family to feed itself.
Here is UKaid partner LSFPZimbabwe explaining how a pfumvudza plot works.
