It wasn’t us – ZEC, Potraz, Econet sing the same tune

So, users on social media raised concern over how Zanu-pf candidates have been able to get in touch with them, using details they feel may have been leaked from the voters roll.

Well the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has said it was not responsible for the leak if there was one.

Econet Wireless, being the biggest mobile services provider and an easy target for the public said it was not involved saying it ‘does not give or sell customer data to third parties’ adding:

The company only shares relevant customer information with regulatory authorities, such as POTRAZ, in line with subscriber rules & its licensing regulations.

Then POTRAZ (that’s Post and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe) also chimed in saying it ‘did not share any subscriber information third partes as it does keeps such data’ It added:

POTRAZ prohibits operators from sharing subscriber information with third parties, the relevant circylar that prohibited such a practice is Regulatory Circular Number 2 of 2013 which is available on our website.

And Zanu-Pf itself really hasn’t said much on the issue which means we really don’t know who got what from where.

ZEC in saying it did not give out data implies there was no data breach. Unless, noone has asked them if there was one. Or if there was one, there is noone who picked it up.

At this point we pretty much do not know what happened.

That said, we remember a service provider who could target people in locations for adverts. Can’t remember them, but ah well…

What do you think?

We are wondering about privacy in general.
