Iconic American singer Etta James is dead. The Jazz singer had been battling with Alzheimer’s disease which was diagnosed in 2008.
During her career Etta sang a variety of music genres including blues, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, soul, gospel and jazz. Starting her career in the mid 1950s, she gained fame with “At last” and “I’d Rather Go Blind” that have become favourites for most lovers.
Although she faced a lot of personal problems including drug addiction she still remained a force to reckon within jazz circles. In the 1980s she tired to re-launch her career with the album, The Seven Year Itch which received warm reception.
Etta was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, and received six Grammy awards, including a 1994 award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for her album “Mystery Lady and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. She was 73.
