Afrotainment-Museke Online African Music Awards 2011
The Afrotainment-Museke Online African Music Awards 2011 were held on Saturday September 24, at the Afrotainment studios in New York. The annual award ceremony which recognizes and celebrates musicians from different parts of Africa combines the diversity of music genres, language and cultures of the African continent.
Artists dominating nominations in 2011 included South Africa’s Freshlyground, Nigeria’s 2Face Idibia, DRC’s Fally Ipupa and Senegal’s Viviane N’dour with five nominations each.
However Congolese artist Fally Ipupa, led the pack taking three trophies home.
Fally who also proved to be crowd favourite on stage, scored wins for Artiste of the Year, Most popular song of the year (“Sexy Dance”) and Central Africa song of the year (“Sexy Dance”)
Another big winner was Viviane Ndour who won the Best Female Artist and Best Afro-rhythms category.
One of the highlights of the evening was when the exquisite looking French-Cameroonian sisters Les Nubian made a call for Africans to look forward to a positive future in their song “Africa for the future” Blitz The Ambassador from Ghana then joined Les Nubian on stage and reinforced the conscious message of the song with his lyrical prowess and energetic rapping style which was met with a loud applause from the crowd.
When Grammy Award-winning Musical Artist Angelique Kidjo came on stage the whole room got up and paid tribute to the songstress from Benin. In receiving the award she thanked Museke and Afrotainment for her first lifetime award and reminded Africans to take pride in the beauty of the African continent she also took time to make her speech in English and French. The audience were also pleasantly surprised when she broke into an impromptu performance.
The presenters of the ceremony Farai Gundan and Tivo Shikapwashya did a good job of keeping the audience alive and one of the lighter moments was when Farai demonstrated her dancing skills. Farai who was dressed by Niger-born haute couture designer Alphadi looked stunning in various African themed outfits that she wore throughout the event and Tivo complemented her well in black and white. In between award presentations people were entertained by interviews that featured Miss Haiti 2011, and many other African fashion art and music celebrities.
The ceremony closed on a high note with collaboration by Fally Ipupa and Les Belles d’ Afrique a Washington DC based dance group. The final act got the audience swaying with some showing their Kwasakwasa and Ndombolo routines. After the ceremony part of the audience then went to Farafina-Cafe where the after party was being held.
A live broadcast of the event aired on Afrotainment’s channels 751 and 667 on the Dish Network in the US. It was also streamed from the http://awards.afrotainment.us and www.moamas.com websites.
