Gold Fields Reports 15,000 Miners On Strike In SA

An illegal mine strike has been reported by the fourth largest producer of bullion in the world, Gold Fields.

Last week 12,000 of its miners went on strike in KDC East mine in protest over the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) representative in its area which was resolved. Now the strike has spread to the KDC West mine.

The reasons for the strike remain unclear, according to Gold Fields.

Troubled Lonmin meanwhile reported that only 6.43% of its workforce had turned up across all shafts in spite of another ultimatum for a return work.

NUM is losing support with the feeling being that they are out of touch are more interested in politics. The more militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union is trying to find its way in.

It is interesting times in South Africa.
