The price of bread has resulted in a lower consumption of bread, according Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) chairperson Tafadzwa Musarara.
He said that while speaking to Larry Kwirirayi on ZiFM Stereo’s The Platform on Monday evening.
Musarara said the consumption of bread had gone down by as much as 18% in recent times as consumers felt it was beyond their spending power.
‘I think bread at the moment, there is a drop of about 18% in terms of bread consumption,” he said.
In speaking about the effect of price increases, he said his members were against it because it hurt their business as much as it affected customers. Fewer customers meant the cost of a unit would go up.
Musarara added that the effect was that consumers either would boycott a product or reduce consumption of the product.
He said essentials would be affected by reduction, he said “People buy by not in the big numbers that they would ordinarily. We are alive that this may cause social and political upheavals.”
Musarara admitted that it becomes inevitable that price would go up as demand falls.
