Twitter wants to charge you USD20 a month for blue tick verification

Twitter is about to go through a mad overhaul folks.

Just a few days after it was taken over by Elon Musk, there is a shakeup looming to the verification process.

Musk tweeted, “The whole verification process is being revamped right now.”

And it appears as if the idea is to charge verified accounts a USD19.99 subscription fee, to get the blue tick. And for those with it already, they will get 90 days to pay for the service before they lose it.

Employees on the project have been given a week (7 November 2022), to implement this or they will get fired.

Author Stephen King is among those who are not impressed, tweeting, “$20 a month to keep my blue check? Fuck that, they should pay me. If that gets instituted, I’m gone like Enron.”

And he has a point.

Without some of these influential users, Twitter would probably not have as many people as they have now. It would become the town square for those who can afford it and verification will be less about identity and more about who can pay for it.

It opens up Twitter to discussions which have not come its way. That is, who should pay for content. Is it the platform or the people putting it there? And the moment that Twitter starts charging publishers, then it goes down that dark route.
