Twitter has announced an end to free blue checkmark verification.

Referred to as ‘legacy’, it was used to show that one was an official or organisation of note.

Elon Musk had always threatened to get rid of it when he took over, and now it seems as if he is pushing through with the plan.

“On April 1st, we will begin winding down our legacy verified program and removing legacy verified checkmarks,” the company wrote in a tweet.

“To keep your blue checkmark on Twitter, individuals can sign up for Twitter Blue,” it concluded.

The verification comes at USD8 via a browser or USD11 if paid via mobile. That is for individuals and per month.

For organisations, it goes for as much as USD1,000 per month.
