X overlord Elon Musk has said he plans to charge a ‘small monthly fee’ for access to the platform.

He said in a chat with Israeli Prime Minister Banjamin Nyetanyahu on a live on the space he acquired a year ago.

“We’re moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the system,” Musk said.

This he said was a move to reduce the number of bots, given that creators would need to find a new payment system every single time they made one.

Musk said the same when he started charging a monthly fee for verification, with a reported 850,000 out his claimed 540 million users taking it up.

The move is the latest as Musk continues to put formerly free services behind a paywall.

It will be curious how this work for millions of users in Africa, who often are exposed when it comes to paying for services online.

Also it will raise further questions around the commercialisation and worse financialisation of identity.
