Ethiopia launches first satellite [video inside]

Ethiopia has launched its first satellite into orbit.

The launch of the Ethiopian Remote Sensing Satellite (ETRSS) took place at a space station in China, though scores of Ethiopian and Chinese officials and scientists gathered at the Entoto Observatory and Research Centre outside the capital, Addis Ababa, early Friday to watch a live broadcast.

It is designed to monitor environment and weather patterns.

The launch makes Ethiopia the 11th African country to launch a satellite with Egypt having been the first in 1988.

Altogether there are 41 African satellites in orbit.

None of them have taken place on African soil.

China paid the bulk of the $8million for this satellite.

The push for satellites being shot into orbit started with private individuals in 2004.

The government established the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute in 2016.
