Zimbabwe Cricket to launch women’s national domestic competition

Zimbabwe Cricket will this week launch a women’s domestic tournament.

Zimbabwe players celebrate victory in action during a World Cup Cricket Qualifier match played with Nigeria at Old Hararians Sports Club in Harare, May 11 2019.

With inaction on the international for the rest of this year, at least the women will get some action beyond the club level.

This is because the tournament will be a provincial one.

The news was confirmed by ZC Director of Cricket Hamilton Masakadza who said it would have been announced at the same time as the men’s competition but it was felt that the women’s needed its own launch.

This is great we think because a lot of the action the women have seen has often been at national team level. The investment in continuous cricket by ZC can only bode well for the ladies who may feel a little rusty as their opportunities have been cut even before the Covid-19 pandemic, what with the suspension Zimbabwe had last year. That meant they missed out on tours and playing in qualifiers to get to the World Cup.

With some stalwarts in the team getting on a bit, this opens up for young players to come through. It also means there is more to pick from for the selectors.
