“We are starting a new process” – Brito

Zimbabwe men’s interim national team head coach Brito Baltemar says the current international window provides an opportunity to start a new process for his charges after their time in the wilderness.

“First of all, we need to understand that we are starting a new process,” Brito spoke in Rwanda ahead of the 2026 Fifa World Cup Qualifiers Africa.

“We are starting a new a process, we the technical staff, the players, the [Normalisation] Committee, everyone, are making a big effort for everything going well.

“After a long time of being banned, some of the players, they are meeting for the first time, so we need time to create connections. We need time to create habits.”

Brito however said that this was by no means an excuse.

“This does not mean we came here without expectations, without feeling that we can do well. So our targets is to come here and represent well, Zimbabwe, to reemerge a picture of what Zimbabweans want to see, and to collect points and to try and create a new mentality, and a new beginning for Zimbabwean football,” the Portuguese gaffer said.

Zimbabwe play Rwanda on Wednesday, before they face off against Nigeria on Sunday.

Both matches are in Rwanda as Zimbabwe does not have facilities to host international matches. The Nigeria match was the Warriors’ home tie.

Meanwhile, more players have continued to land in the country for the matches.
